Chapter 2: The Athena

Behind the Pink Wall offered a mode of living in clear contradiction to the present time of suburban growth. Anderson’s high-rise communities (Preston Tower and The Athena) were studied by real estate business students at North Texas State University in Denton. Professor David R. Fitch told his students, “The biggest market [for high-rise living] are those who have had houses and prefer to get rid of the job of getting leaves out the gutter…[“Preston Tower Impresses Class of Business Students,” Dallas Morning News, January 8, 1966].

The lower rise complexes were marketed as garden style apartments. The area was hailed as a prototype catering to the apartment carriage trade. Hal Anderson stated, “The center has set a precedent for the nation and has been under study for some time by investors from New York City and developers from such cities as Tulsa, Phoenix and Los Angeles...[Key, “Hal Anderson to Build 5 Luxury Apartments.” Dallas Morning News, July 22, 1961]
